Oh yeah, using sw:d is a very useful tool for getting mana back when your other CDs are down. I still have to use it from time to time, especially on fights with a lot of multi-dotting.
And as for MB, you pretty much want to use it every time it’s off cooldown. If you wait for an orb to proc just so empowered shadows can be applied, you could be losing a lot of DPS there.
Blizz made clipping dots impossible with Cataclysm, so if you recast a dot, you won’t lose any ticks. That was a really welcome change :3 It’s still best to wait until it’s about to run out before recasting though.
